About the Programs FCNLL Offers

The Goal of Little League...

To help youngsters develop citizenship, discipline, teamwork and physical well being through sports.  To help youngsters learn their own strengths & weaknesses, the meanings of sportsmanship and cooperation, the essence of competition, and the qualities that constitute effective leadership.

Frederick County National Little League is a non-profit, charitable organization whose mission is to provide a safe, instructional and fun environment for the children of Frederick County, Virginia, ages 4-16 that live or attend school within our league boundaries. Chartered under the umbrella of Little League International, Inc, and Little League District 3 of Virginia, we share a mission to "to promote, develop, supervise, and voluntarily assist in all lawful ways, the interest of those who will participate in Little League Baseball and Softball."

Since 1984, Frederick County National Little League has been a part of youth sports in the Winchester, Stephens City, and Frederick County community. Our non-profit organization operates as an all-volunteer program. We rely on the support of our network of families, local businesses, corporate and community sponsors. Through this generous outpouring of support, Frederick County National Little League continues this tradition and mission so that more than 500 boys and girls, ages 4-16, in seven different divisions of baseball and softball programs can play every season.

Baseball Divisions

Tee Ball Baseball

Ages 4-6, Co-ed.  Tee Ball Baseball is for boys and girls 4-6 years old who want to learn the fundamentals of throwing, hitting, fielding, sportsmanship and teamwork. In Tee Ball, players hit a softer baseball off of a batting tee. Rules of the game may be varied to accommodate the need for teaching. The primary goals of Tee Ball are to instruct children in the fundamentals of baseball and to allow them to experience the value of teamwork. Tee Ball rosters are usually composed of between 9 and 12 players.  A continuous batting order is used and no score or standings are kept since this division is solely focused on teaching fundamentals and teamwork concepts.  By local option, a player who is league age 6 for the current season and has played at least one year in Tee-Ball may be "moved up" to the coach pitch division if the parent/legal guardian of the player desires that the player 'move up'.   Aside from teaching the sport of baseball, Little League prides itself on strengthening the self-esteem of its participants, and promoting teamwork and sportsmanship.

Minor League - Coach Pitch Baseball

Ages 6-8.  Coach Pitch baseball is for younger participants with less experience. This division serves as our training ground for players pursuing baseball. In this program, coaches focus on throwing, fielding & hitting fundamentals and mechanics. During games, coaches live pitch to every batter until a hit or an out is recorded. A softer baseball is used during practices and games. Our Coach Pitch Baseball Division program is typically for players ages 6-8.  Exception: Participants league age 6 are permitted to advance to the Coach Pitch Division only after participation in Tee-Ball for at least one year. Rosters may be composed of between 12 and 20 players, but our league typically has rosters in the 12-15 player range. Practices are held once or twice per week, with two games per week. The season is generally comprised of approximately 12-14 games and no standings or scores are kept. The diamond used is a 60-foot diamond.  Aside from teaching the sport of baseball, Little League prides itself on strengthening the self-esteem of its participants, and promoting teamwork and sportsmanship.

Minor League-Player Pitch Baseball

Ages 9-11.  Minor Baseball is for participants with experience playing baseball. It continues to be an instructional league and further expands on pitching/catching and advanced playing techniques. Players face player pitching. The Minor Baseball Division program is typically for players ages 9-11. However, by local option, some of the players could "play down" in the coach pitch division and some of the players could "play up" in the Major Division. This decision is made entirely by the league's player agent and board of directors. Rosters may be composed of between 12 and 15 players, but our league typically has rosters in the 12 player range.  Although this division operates with increased competitiveness, there is still a focus on personal development and encouragement. The season generally is comprised of approximately 12-14 games and standings and scores are kept. If residency and regular-season game attendance requirements are met, players in this division are also eligible to be selected to the 9-10 year old & 11-12 year old Tournament Teams (or "All Stars") where they can experience tournament competition at the District, Sectional, & State levels. The diamond used is a 60-foot diamond and the pitching distance is 46 feet.  Aside from teaching the sport of baseball, Little League prides itself on strengthening the self-esteem of its participants, and promoting teamwork and sportsmanship.

Rosters may be composed of between 12 and 15 players, but our league typically has rosters in the 12 player range.   Although this division operates with increased competitiveness, there is still a focus on personal development and encouragement. This division is operated as a player pitch division and a 12" softball is used. It is recommended for safety and success of the player that 10 or 11 year old girls who play in the major softball division have at least one year of experience in the minor softball division program to gain basic skills before advancing to the major softball division.  In this advanced program, coaches continue to focus on throwing, fielding, hitting & pitching fundamentals and mechanics. Rosters may be composed of between 12 and 15 players, but our league typically has rosters in the 12 player range.  Major league teams are drafted and try outs are held for the major softball division.  Only players who are 'moving up' to the major softball division or are new to FCNLL need to tryout.  Players will stay with the same team for their duration in the major softball division when possible.
