Pearce Bucher: A Journey from Little League to Physical Therapy and Beyond

Pearce Bucher’s journey from the baseball fields of Frederick County National Little League (FCNLL) to pursuing a career in physical therapy serves as a testament to how formative experiences in youth sports shape not only athletic abilities but life skills that carry far beyond the game.

“I started my baseball career at FCNLL and played four years,” Pearce recalls. He has fond memories of his early years, especially his first diving play as a nine-year-old in the player pitch division. “I was pitching when a pop-up came down the third baseline. I remember telling myself to go for it and diving for the catch. My family was in the stands, and I was covered in dirt but so proud of myself.” That moment, one of many in his career, helped shape his passion for the game and reinforced the importance of hard work and effort, lessons that remain with him to this day.

“Playing baseball taught me the value of hard work. It’s not just about doing the bare minimum but putting in the extra effort when no one else is watching,” Pearce reflects. This mentality extended beyond the field, influencing his approach to academics and life. Whether it was practicing with his dad when no one else was at the field or studying late into the night, Pearce learned that success comes from dedication and perseverance.

The impact of FCNLL, however, wasn’t just about baseball skills; it was about life lessons. “Baseball was my first real exposure to competition and teamwork,” Pearce shares. “It taught me how to work with others to accomplish a shared goal, how to lead a team, and how to handle both success and failure.” These lessons have guided him through the rigors of school and sports, ultimately leading him to Shenandoah University, where he now studies to become a doctor of physical therapy.

Throughout his FCNLL experience, Pearce's father served as his coach, instilling in him a commitment to not only his own success but to the success of the whole team. “My dad always had me at the field practicing, even when our team didn’t have practice,” Pearce recalls. “He wanted everyone on the team to succeed, not just me. That dedication to the team’s growth made a lasting impact on me.”

Now, as he prepares to finish his studies in physical therapy, Pearce looks to the future. He dreams of working with professional sports teams to help athletes recover from injuries and return to peak performance. But he hasn’t forgotten where his passion for the game started. "Baseball has shaped who I am today, and that’s why I believe in supporting the Pitch In for the Future campaign,” he says. “Everyone deserves the chance to play baseball, to experience the camaraderie and the lessons it teaches. Whether they’re playing for fun or hoping to pursue the game professionally, it’s a valuable experience."

Pearce’s advice to current FCNLL players? “Embrace the process, not just the outcome. Whether you hit a home run or strike out, there’s always something to learn from it. The friendships and lessons you take away from the game will last a lifetime.”

In reflecting on the changes that could improve the FCNLL experience, Pearce notes the importance of field quality. “When I played, the fields weren’t always in the best shape, and we often didn’t have time to practice before games,” he shares. “Improving the facilities would have made a big difference, allowing for more practice and better experiences for the players.”

Pearce’s story is a reminder of the far-reaching impact of Little League and why supporting the Pitch in for the Future campaign is so crucial. By donating, volunteering, or contributing in any way, the community can help provide future generations of players the opportunity to develop not only their skills but also the values of hard work, leadership, and teamwork that will serve them for years to come.
